A quick and easy sheet pan recipe roasting hot dogs with caramelized onions and tangy sport peppers for a cozy, flavorful meal perfect for busy weeknights or casual dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 standard beef or all-beef hot dogs (14 oz / 400 g)
  • 8 soft hot dog buns, preferably brioche or potato rolls
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 jar sport peppers (about 4 oz / 115 g), drained
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (extra virgin preferred)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Optional toppings: yellow mustard, ketchup, sport pepper relish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Thinly slice 2 large yellow onions and place them in a mixing bowl. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil, a pinch of salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Toss to coat evenly.
  3. Spread the onions out on a rimmed 9×13-inch baking sheet in an even layer. Nestle the hot dogs among the onions, spacing them to allow heat circulation.
  4. Roast for 15 minutes until onions begin to soften and brown and hot dogs start to cook through.
  5. Remove the pan from the oven and scatter the drained sport peppers over the onions and hot dogs. Gently stir the onions to redistribute evenly.
  6. Return the pan to the oven and roast for another 10 minutes until onions are deeply caramelized and hot dogs are browned and cooked through.
  7. During the last 5 minutes, optionally warm the hot dog buns wrapped in foil in the oven.
  8. Remove everything from the oven. Place each hot dog in a warmed bun, top with caramelized onions and sport peppers. Add mustard or ketchup if desired and serve.

Notes

Slice onions thinly for even caramelization. Do not overcrowd the pan to allow proper roasting. Stir onions halfway through roasting. If onions start to burn, reduce oven temperature by 25°F (15°C). Warm buns in the last 5 minutes for best texture. Sport peppers can be substituted with pickled jalapeños or pepperoncini slices.
