Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large sweet onion (e.g., Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (or dairy-free alternative)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Peel the onion and cut off about ½ inch from the top. Place it flat side down and make vertical cuts, stopping about ½ inch from the root to keep the onion intact. Rotate and repeat until it resembles a flower.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth to make the egg wash.
  3. In another bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper to season the flour.
  4. Gently separate the onion petals and dust them with the seasoned flour mixture. Shake off excess flour, then dip the onion in the egg wash, ensuring all petals are coated.
  5. Sprinkle panko breadcrumbs over the onion, pressing gently to adhere. Make sure the entire surface is covered for maximum crunch.
  6. Place the onion in the air fryer basket and generously spray with cooking spray. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, checking halfway through and spraying again for even browning.
  7. While the onion cooks, mix mayonnaise, sour cream, hot sauce, and garlic powder in a bowl until smooth to make the Spicy Ranch Dip. Adjust hot sauce to your preferred spice level and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  8. Once the onion is golden and crispy, carefully transfer it to a serving platter. Garnish the dip with fresh parsley, if desired, and enjoy!

Notes

[‘Use a sharp knife for clean cuts when preparing the onion.’, ‘Ensure every petal is fully coated with flour and breadcrumbs for maximum crunch.’, ‘Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket and use cooking spray for even crisping.’, ‘Reheat leftovers in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes to restore crispiness.’]
