These crispy ham and cheese sticks are easy party appetizers featuring flaky puff pastry wrapped around savory ham and a melty cheese blend. Perfect for quick snacks or entertaining guests.

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 8 ounces (225g) thinly sliced ham
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water (egg wash)
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Unroll one sheet of thawed puff pastry on a clean surface. Slice into 12 strips about 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. Repeat with the second sheet.
  3. Lightly spread Dijon mustard over each strip using the back of a spoon or small brush.
  4. Lay a thin slice of ham along the length of each strip, trimming if necessary.
  5. Sprinkle shredded sharp cheddar and mozzarella cheese blend generously over the ham on each strip.
  6. Optionally sprinkle a pinch of black pepper and garlic powder over each strip.
  7. Carefully roll each strip from one end to the other, encasing the ham and cheese inside. Press edges gently to seal.
  8. Place sticks seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush tops with the beaten egg wash.
  9. Bake for 15-18 minutes until pastry is puffed, golden brown, and cheese is bubbling.
  10. Let sticks rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before serving to crisp up.

Notes

Keep puff pastry cold to prevent stickiness. Do not overload filling to avoid sogginess. Use egg wash for golden color. Tent with foil if browning too quickly. Freeze unbaked sticks on a tray before storing for up to 2 months. Reheat in oven for best texture.
