Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups (345 grams) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (227 grams) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¼ cups (250 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) milk
  • 1 ½ cups (270 grams) semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) coconut oil or vegetable oil
  • Optional toppings: sea salt flakes, edible glitter, or colored sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed for 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk, starting and ending with the flour. Mix on low speed until just combined.
  6. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to about ¼ inch (6 mm) thickness. Cut out heart shapes and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges just start to turn golden. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Melt the chocolate chips with coconut or vegetable oil in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second bursts, stirring until smooth and glossy.
  10. Dip half of each cooled cookie into the melted chocolate, letting excess drip off. Place on parchment paper and quickly sprinkle with sea salt or sprinkles.
  11. Let the chocolate set at room temperature for about 30 minutes or refrigerate for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes to prevent spreading. Use room temperature butter and egg for better mixing. Ensure cookies are completely cooled before dipping in chocolate to prevent melting. Sprinkle sea salt on wet chocolate for a sweet-salty contrast. Reheat chocolate gently if it thickens during dipping.
