A rich and indulgent breakfast featuring thick slices of brioche or challah stuffed with creamy Nutella, dipped in a cinnamon-vanilla egg custard, and cooked to golden perfection. Perfect for a cozy weekend brunch or special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 thick slices brioche or challah bread (about 1 inch thick)
  • ½ cup Nutella
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk (240 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
  • Fresh berries or sliced bananas (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your bread: Take 8 thick slices of brioche or challah (about 1 inch thick). Using a butter knife, carefully slice each piece horizontally, creating a pocket but not cutting all the way through. This will hold the Nutella filling. (5 minutes)
  2. Fill the bread with Nutella: Spread about 1 tablespoon of Nutella inside each pocket. Be generous but avoid overstuffing to prevent leaking. Close the slices gently and press lightly to seal. (5 minutes)
  3. Make the custard batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs, 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Whisk until smooth and slightly frothy. (3 minutes)
  4. Heat your pan: Place a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt, coating the surface evenly. (2 minutes)
  5. Dip the stuffed bread: One at a time, dip each stuffed bread slice into the egg mixture. Let it soak for about 20 seconds on each side to absorb the custard but not get soggy. (5 minutes)
  6. Cook the French toast: Carefully place the dipped bread on the hot skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and slightly crispy. Add more butter as needed between batches. The bread should smell buttery and look beautifully toasted. (15 minutes)
  7. Serve immediately: Transfer the cooked French toast to a plate. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and add fresh berries or sliced bananas on the side. (2 minutes)

Notes

Use thick slices of brioche or challah for best results. Avoid overfilling the bread with Nutella to prevent leaking. Medium heat is key to get a golden crust without burning. Chilling stuffed slices for 10 minutes before dipping can help firm the filling and reduce mess. Use butter in the pan for flavor and browning. Reheat leftovers in a toaster oven or regular oven to maintain crispiness; avoid microwaving.
