  • 1 lb (450 g) lean ground turkey (93% lean or higher)
  • 8 large romaine or butter lettuce leaves (about 1 head)
  • 2 tbsp taco seasoning (blend of chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, paprika, and salt)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) diced tomatoes or fresh salsa
  • ½ cup (50 g) shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Gently rinse 8 large romaine or butter lettuce leaves and pat dry with paper towels. Set aside for serving.
  2. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 pound (450 g) of lean ground turkey and cook, breaking it up with a spatula, for 6-8 minutes or until no longer pink and slightly browned.
  3. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning over the turkey. Stir well to coat evenly. Add about 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of water to help distribute the spices and create a little sauce. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  4. While the turkey simmers, dice fresh tomatoes or prepare your favorite salsa (about 1 cup/240 ml). Have shredded cheese ready if using.
  5. Spoon a generous amount of the turkey mixture onto each lettuce leaf. Top with diced tomatoes or salsa, and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese if desired.
  6. Serve immediately for maximum crunch. Optionally, add a squeeze of lime or a dollop of sour cream for extra zing.

Notes

To keep turkey juicy, add a teaspoon of olive oil or a splash of chicken broth during cooking if it feels dry. Avoid overfilling lettuce leaves to prevent tearing. Assemble wraps just before serving to keep lettuce crisp. For dairy-free option, omit cheese or substitute with avocado slices. Homemade taco seasoning allows control over sodium and spice levels.
