  • ½ cup (50 g) breadcrumbs (panko recommended)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • ½ cup (75 g) grated onion
  • 1 tsp chili flakes
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp cumin powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup (240 ml) tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce (or sriracha/chili garlic sauce)
  • A handful fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped
  • 2 cups (400 g) cooked rice or quinoa

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) if baking meatballs, or heat a skillet over medium heat if frying.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, grated onion, chili flakes, smoked paprika, cumin powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly.
  3. Shape mixture into evenly sized meatballs about 1.5 inches (4 cm) in diameter, approximately 16 meatballs.
  4. Heat olive oil in skillet over medium heat. Cook meatballs 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Alternatively, bake meatballs on a lined baking sheet for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway.
  5. While meatballs cook, prepare sauce by combining tomato sauce and hot sauce in a small saucepan. Warm gently over low heat, stirring occasionally.
  6. Transfer cooked meatballs to the sauce and coat gently. Simmer for 5 minutes to absorb flavors.
  7. Serve meatballs over cooked rice or quinoa. Garnish with chopped parsley or cilantro.

Notes

Do not overmix the meat mixture to keep meatballs tender. Use gentle folding motions. For crispier meatballs, sear in batches without overcrowding the pan. Rest meatballs a few minutes after cooking to redistribute juices. Start cooking rice or quinoa first to multitask efficiently. For gluten-free, use gluten-free breadcrumbs. Adjust chili flakes and hot sauce to control spice level.
